In a new article together with my former PhD supervisor Professor Jan Dhaene (KU Leuven, Belgium) and my academic brother dr. Hamza Hanbali (Monash University, Australia) we investigate the usefulness of wearing a mask when lockdown measures are loosened.

Our conclusion

We conclude that wearing a mask is a must, especially when social distancing is not possible. When investigating the effects that masks have on slowing down the spread of a virus, there are many unknowns. Scientific research and experience can maybe fill in some of these unknowns.

However, we show in our paper that even without these unknowns, wearing a mask is always the better option. Therefore, our recommendations is:

“Waiting to introduce a compulsory wear-a-mask policy in public spaces is an unforgivable waste of time.”
